The Lobi people of Burkina Faso used such figures to honor ancestors, please the spirits and protect the community. Carved figures were placed on family shrines and served various functions (protection against enemies, intercession with spirits and ancestors, prevention of sickness…).
Piet Meyer states that such carved figures were considered to be beings in their own rights. Their essence was answerable both to the spirits and to men.
