Placed on either side of the entrance to the traditional house, Kanak doorposts (chambranles) combine an essential architectural function with a major spiritual dimension. Sculpted within the natural curve of houp wood trunks, these pieces directly personify a protective ancestor of the clan. Crafted in low relief, these works adhere to precise aesthetic codes: the upper section features a face with anthropomorphic traits, while the lower part is adorned with specific geometric patterns reflecting their region of origin in New Caledonia.
The visible aperture above the head allowed the doorpost to be secured to the entrance pillar using plant-fiber ropes, while its base was firmly embedded into the house floor.
Known as jovo or talé depending on the region, these doorposts were the symbolic guardians of the home of the person for whom they were carved. As such, they played an active role during mourning rituals following the death of a chief or an important clan member. Notably, the doorposts were struck by mourners before being abandoned, ritually mutilated, or sometimes repurposed as thresholds or components of sarcophagi.
